Centering community to shape equitable health futures.
Stanford Medicine’s PRIHSM Center needed to unite physicians, professors, researchers, and community leaders in a shared vision for equitable maternal health. WOCC designed and facilitated a full-day retreat that navigated the intersections of federal funding, academic systems, and community priorities—clarifying goals, embedding community voice, and aligning strategies to meet the outcomes of their multi-year grant.

In collaboration with PRIHSM’s leadership and Community Advisory Board, WOCC brought together more than 50 participants, including medical professionals, faculty, and community members most impacted by the Center’s work. We centered community voice and lived experience in the visioning and program evaluation process, using facilitation techniques that encouraged cross-project connection and collaborative goal setting.
By understanding the complexities of working within federally funded academic programs while staying responsive to community needs, we designed a process that honored both institutional requirements and grassroots priorities. Our participatory approach embedded shared understanding of equity-centered maternal health work into PRIHSM’s strategy, ensuring alignment from policy to practice. -
